Many of the latest ECUs are locked from the factory, the manufacturer protects them so they can't be read or written through the OBD port or with standard tools. Until the ECU is unlocked, no tuning, DTC work or software solution can be applied.
On BMWs, this applies to ECUs with a build date after June 2020 as a general rule of thumb, in practice that is the G-series cars:
- G20/G21 3-Series
- G30/G31 5-Series
- G22/G23 4-Series
- G42 2-Series
- G32 6-Series GT, G01 X3, G02 X4, G05 X5, G06 X6, G07 X7
- G80 M3, G82 M4, G87 M2 - OEM CS Flash is possible without unlock
Late F-chassis cars built after 2019 (ish) are affected too. e.g. M2 / M3 / M4 - OEM CS Flash is possible without unlock
The unlock can be done in person, or via our Mail In Unlock process: remove the ECU from your car and post it to us. The job is completed the same day and the ECU is returned with next day postage.
